English, Reading, & Libraries Department
Department Description - The West Essex Regional School District English department engages students in the work of reading and writing guided by the demands of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. These rigorous standards ask us to support and guide students as they tackle increasingly complex texts and practice writing that questions, analyzes, and explains.
Throughout their course of study, students build knowledge through content rich non-fiction, and through their writing, students apply sophisticated ideas and concepts to the literary content. Students enjoy regular practice with complex texts, rich in academic language. The texts are inclusive of a wide array of genres including the novel, memoir, speech, essay, short story, poetry, literary nonfiction, history, and biography.
What's New - After months of planning, we have completely restructured our Middle School reading program effective this school year. Students in seventh and eighth grade will cycle through four unique reading courses focusing on key standards, while providing them with enrichment opportunities. In addition to reading comprehension and analysis, students will have the opportunity to engage in research, public speaking, and creative writing.
Extracurriculars - It's easy to get involved! At the Middle School, check out Knightlights and Knightly News. At the High School, get involved in the National English Honor Society, Rountable, Quiz Bowl, and Wessex Wire. For more information, visit the clubs and activities page of your respective school.
