Mathematics

All students should be mathematically powerful. They should have the ability to explore, conjecture, and reason logically, as well as the ability to use a variety of mathematical methods effectively to solve non-routine problems. The courses in the Mathematics Department are designed to provide the important basic and advanced skills required by students in order to experience success in their continuing education and in the career of their choice. The goals of the department include helping the students to become better problem solvers and better critical thinkers, to think and communicate using the language of mathematics, to value the importance of mathematics in society, and to understand the connections of mathematics to other disciplines.

The mission of the Mathematics Department is to:

  • Achieve an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics in all its interrelated forms.
  • Provide students exposure to the type of mathematics necessary for future success in high school, college, and in careers in business and industry.
  • Provide students with experience dealing with problems requiring thought and explanation to develop problem solvers and critical thinkers.
  • Communicate using correct mathematics vocabulary in oral and written form.
  • Offer wide selections of challenging courses that require students to think critically, problem solve, and apply scientific content and knowledge.
  • Use technology to facilitate and enhance mathematics learning and computation, infusing it throughout the curriculum.
  • Recognize the cumulative nature of mathematics as it evolves in algebra, geometry, and calculus.
  • Identify and model mathematical connections, functions, and patterns to other subject areas and to real-world applications.
  • Increase student achievement on standardized tests.
