West Essex Regional School District is Recognized as a Best Communities for Music Education!

For the fifth year in a row, The National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas recognized the West Essex Regional School District as a Best Communities for Music Education.  The awards program recognizes the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education a part of the curriculum.  Designations are given to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and a consistent access to music education.

This year, West Essex is one of 37 districts in New Jersey and one of 583 districts nationally, to be recognized for this designation.  Congratulations to our West Essex music teachers Mr. Anthony Fabrizio, Mr. Rick Fitzke, Ms. Donna Mateyka, Ms. Christa Rizzo and Mr. Alex Soares.

If someone mentions fencing, it's generally about fence posts, backyard privacy and barbed-wire security, not foils, sabres, and epees, the three-bladed weapons of the Summer Olympics sport of fencing.

High school varsity fencing is a winter sport which has grown significantly in New Jersey, one of the few states where it is a varsity sport.  The league is growing steadily, and there are currently 55 varsity programs in the state.  The West Essex High School fencing team is one of these programs.  Students can varsity fence from grades nine to twelve and earn a varsity letter in ninth grade.  Graduates can continue fencing in college where it is a NCAA sport with most of the Ivy League schools and other very competitive colleges ranked in Division 1.

Fencing is a cerebral sport of strategy, nuances, and complexities.  The West Essex Fencing Boosters Club is sponsoring an information and education session with fencing demonstrations to all interested students and parents on Monday, May 14 beginning at 7:00 pm in the middle school gym.  We hope that you will join our team and experience the joys of fencing.  Fencers Ready?

Please RSVP by May 9 to Cathy at cathedd@cs.com
