West Essex Track and Field competes at the New Balance National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina

Reanda Richards won the 400 Meter Hurdle National Championship

This weekend the West Essex Track and Field Team sent another strong contingent of athletes to the New Balance National Championships held in Greensboro, N.C. The National Championship Meet is a three day event that includes the very best track and field athletes from across the country who have met the difficult and exacting qualifying entry standards. West Essex was represented by nine female athletes that included freshman Arianna Lee and Vivian Onnembo; sophomores Jenna Chan and Delilah Cruz and seniors Gabriela Karch, Julia Geiger, Alexia Perez, Reanda Richards, and Celia White

Reanda Richards capped off her incredible track and field career by winning the 400 Meter Hurdle National Championship with a  personal best time of 58.91 seconds. This incredible and rarefied achievement makes Reanda the first national champion in school history.

Also placing in the emerging elite division was the prolific West Essex Girls 4X400 Meter Relay Team of Alexia Perez, Gabriela Karch, Vivian Onnembo, and Reanda Richards. The foursome ran a super fast time of 3:54.67, placing second, and just missing their own school record despite running in the blistering North Carolina heat. That was the fastest time in Essex County this season and the second fastest time of all New Jersey Group 3 schools

The girls shuttle hurdle team of Jenna Chan, Julia Geiger, Delilah Cruz, and Reanda Richards ran a season's best time of 1:02.85 finishing fifteenth in a loaded field of twenty-four elite teams. That was the fastest time in Essex County by almost five seconds and the second fastest time of all New Jersey Group 3 schools.

Lastly freshman Arianna Lee who competed in the triple jump, was the first freshman from West Essex to qualify for an individual  National Event. Arianna had an impressive jump of 33 feet 10 inches and currently holds the freshman school records for both the long jump and triple jump.

Since 2016 the West Essex Track and Field Program has had  62 athletes qualify for the Indoor and Outdoor New Balance National Championships earning a total of twenty-five national medals. This is an amazing testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes.
