A Season to Remember for the Wrestling Knights

The West Essex Knights wrestling team turned a supposed rebuilding year into one of the most memorable seasons in program history.

The run began in February, as captains Christian Bastante, Dante D’Achille, Kole Corcoran, and Reid Clausi led the Knights to a second-place finish at the Essex County Tournament, where four champions were crowned and Bastante earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.

West Essex then won 14 straight dual meets, defeating top programs and capturing the North II Group III State Sectional Championship - just the eighth in school history - with a dramatic win over Morris Hills wrestling. Along the way, Bastante and Clausi each reached 100 career wins.

The momentum continued at the District 8 Tournament, where West Essex crowned four champions - Adam Aydinov, Joseph Formosa, Clausi, and Joe Cuttruzula - and advanced 9 of 14 wrestlers to Regions, winning the team title. Clausi was named Wrestler of the Year, while Coach Markey and Coach Nick Hughes earned Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year honors in a clean sweep.

At the Region 2 Tournament, four wrestlers advanced to the state championships: Formosa (3rd), Bastante (4th), Clausi (1st), and Cuttruzula (2nd).

Competing in Atlantic City at the New Jersey State Wrestling Championships, Clausi led the way with a 4th-place finish in the state. Cuttruzula finished 10th after a hard-fought run, Formosa showed major promise as a freshman, and Bastante closed his career among the state’s top 32.

From start to finish, the Knights turned expectations upside down, delivering a championship season, a clean sweep of honors, and a future as strong as ever. GO KNIGHTS!
