Senior Emily Boksz Elected as Student Rep to the WE BOE

In 2022, the West Essex School District adopted a new policy that would allow HS students to elect one of their peers to join the West Essex Board of Education. This decision was a part of the District’s Strategic Plan, aiming to improve the school culture and climate and giving students a voice in their education.
This year, WEHS students have selected Senior Emily Boksz to represent them on the Board. Emily is no stranger to leading initiatives around the District. She has been instrumental in implementing the “No Place for Hate” initiative, and has been a key member of the Culture and Climate initiative. Emily explained that being a key part of these programs has given her adequate experience to serve as Student Representative to the Board.
In addition to these initiatives, Emily is a member of the Multicultural Club, Roundtable, and Chamber Orchestra, and has passed the biliteracy test in Polish! She loves advocating for students, and is ready to do just that.
Emily explained that in her role she is obligated to stand up for students, add input on proposed policies, and share the thoughts of her peers with District Administration and Board Members. She plans on attending all meetings, and will have a literal “seat at the table.” Emily stated that she loves attending WEHS, and hopes to spread that love to her peers through her work with the Board.
HS Principal Dr. Kimberly Westervelt believes that Emily’s kindness and experience will make her an excellent representative to BOE. Westervelt explained that Emily is friendly to all students, not just one specific group. Further, Dr. Westervelt explained that Emily will be working hand-in-hand with the WEHS Student Council, and bringing their ideas and concerns to the Board if necessary.
When asked if Public Service is in her future, Emily shared that she plans on entering the Medical Field after college. But, she hasn’t ruled out Public Service later in life.
Congratulations, Emily!
