The West Essex Regional School District Board of Education, in conjunction with the district administration, has identified the need to pursue a referendum to address critical facility needs within our schools. Decisions will be made with the goal of maximizing value for taxpayers while investing wisely in our students’ future.

Clear and consistent communication remains a priority throughout this process. Updates and resources will continue to be posted on this page, and key information will also be shared through the district’s social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

Referendum Timeline

Summer 2025 - The Board of Education identified the need to pursue a bond referendum as a means to generate upfront funds and secure state aid for critical facility improvements. 

Fall 2025 - District administration and the Board of Education, in partnership with the district architect, assessed facilities and planned a demographic study to ensure that long-term plans align with future needs.

Winter 2025-26 - District leadership continues to work with the architects, financial advisor and bond counsel to ensure that the plan upholds its fiscal responsibility to the community. 

Late Winter/Early Spring 2026 - Project applications will be sent to the New Jersey Department of Education for review and state aid determination. This mandatory state review will help determine the amount of state aid eligibility for proposed projects, and the estimated tax impact. This review can take up to six months to complete.

Spring 2026 - Upon completion of the state’s review, the Board of Education will receive a letter of eligibility with the state aid figures. The Board will review the funding and finalize the details of the ballot, including project scope and estimated tax impact. When the ballot is finalized, the district will launch a multi-faceted communications campaign to share the details of the proposal and engage with the entire community.

Fall 2026 - The vote is anticipated to take place in fall 2026.
