    CHORUS 7 AND 8 - Elective (Grades 7 and 8)

    Prerequisite:None

     

    Chorus is a course open to allstudents who desire to improve their vocal skills and develop sight-reading skills.
    This course covers literature from various cultures and historical periods, emphasizing two, three, and four
    part harmony. Students are expectedto attend all scheduled activities and performances.

    These courses are designed to meet the needs of those students who are interested in developing good vocal techniques and sight reading skills. A variety of music of significant worth will be studied and performed. Students are responsible to attend all scheduled activities, dress rehearsals and performances. All students who wish to be in Chorus are welcome, however an entrance audition is required for placement. Members of the chorus must attend one small group lesson per week.

     

    There are four components of the Choir Program for all CPA and Honors Students:

     

    Vocal Group Lessons -- All choir students receive small group lesson instruction once a week.  The lessons develop necessary skills that allow each student to benefit from the ensemble experience.  Diction, breath control, tone, reading, technique, pitch and musicianship are studied.

     

    *All Choir Students will be recommended by their director for one of the three below Choirs, which meet during separate periods in the school day. 

    West Essex ChoraleSometimes referred to as “Mixed Choir,” this ensemble is a large vocal ensemble that is open to all regardless of experience.  An audition is necessary only for the purposes of voice placement. Through daily rehearsals and weekly group lessons, individuals developthe skills necessary for technically sound and healthy singing.  Topics such as breathing and posture, clear vowel production, intonation, balance, blend, articulation of consonants, tone color, music reading, and music style are addressed.  Emphasis is placed on individual development within a supportive group environment.  A variety of standard and popular repertoires are performed.

     

    Bella Voce Womens’ Choirthis course is designed for female voices.  Incoming freshmen and upper class female students who cannot fit Concert Choir into their schedule will be placed into this ensemble.  An audition is necessary only for the purposes of voice placement. Through daily rehearsals and weekly group lessons, individuals developthe skills necessary for technically sound and healthy singing.  Topics such as breathing and posture, clear vowel production, intonation, balance, blend, articulation of consonants, tonecolor, music reading, and music style are addressed.  Emphasis is placed on individual development within a supportive group environment.  A variety of standard and popular repertoires are performed.

     

    Chamber Choir The Chamber Choir is the most advanced vocal ensemble at WEHS.  This ensemble performs a broad range of the best music available for choral ensemble.  Students must possess strong technical and musical skills and the willingness to perform at the highest possible level.  A variety of the highest level of standard and popular repertoires are performed.

     

    Students taking chorus at the honors level will have additional responsibilities beyondthe CPA level chorus class. These responsibilities include a combination of journal writing, guided reading, musical experiences outside of school, participation in after school music ensembles, preparation for Region Chorus and All-State Chorus, and preparation of level-appropriate solo repertoire. Student selecting to take chorus at the honors level must successfully complete an honors audition to be held in the spring of the prior school year.
