The 2016 version of the Boys and Girls Winter Track Teams put together a season of record breaking performances, and program firsts that catapulted the program to both state and national attention.  Highlights included the Boys Team winning the program's first ever State Group Relay Championship, and State Sectional Championship, with the Boys and Girls combining to win State Sectional Championships in seven different events.  The program had previously crowned only two state sectional champions in its history.  The Girls Team earned the program's first ever Conference Championship, and by the seasons end ten school records had been broken.  Head Coach Tim Cullen was named the New Jersey Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year by NJ.Com.

When it looked like 2017 could not possible top the preceding year, under the direction of Coach Cullen, the Knights continued to set new standards on both a state and national level.  The 2017 Boys and Girls Winter Track Teams both won State Sectional Team Championships.  Individual sectional champions were crowned in eight individual events.  The following week the Girls won the program's first ever Group Team Championship, after finishing second during the 2016 outdoor season.  The Boys and Girls teams both won the Super Essex Conference Championship, and both teams placed in the Essex County Relay Team Championship.  The Knights earned nine medals at the prestigious Meet of Champions, and have qualified eleven athletes for the New Balance National Championships in New Your City later this month.  From very humble beginnings, the West Essex High School Winter Track and Field Teams have risen to become one of the premier programs in the nation.
